VA Communicating With Empathy Course

This foundational-level course, part of the Interpersonal Effectiveness Learning Program, is designed to equip Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) employees with the tools they need to build positive relationships with others. Incorporating VA scenarios, this course addresses ways to improve one’s communication skills with a focus on listening with empathy. Participants learn the traits of good listeners and the specific skills they use. Using engaging discussions and activities, including role-play and self-assessments, participants learn specific strategies for becoming better communicators in the workplace.

Course DESCRIPTION

This course addresses the importance of empathy in workplace communication. Participants examine ways to increase active listening skills, interpret nonverbal communication, and consider how work roles can influence the way people communicate. Through engaging discussions and role-play, participants learn how to become better empathetic communicators and encourage open dialogue in the workplace.
